More about half shaft retention loops    The stock Corvette rear suspension is known for it's self destructive tendencies. The NHRA require's a drive shaft safety loop on all cars running 13.99 (8.14 eighth) and quicker. The exception is cars running 13.00 (8.14 eighth) with street tires. This is on page 23 of the NHRA 2003 rule book under DRIVE LINE. On the same pagelisted under REAREND the rules state the 1963 to 1982 Corvette with IRS are required to have a 1/4 x 1",360 degree axle retention loop on each axle.    Our Safety Loops meet the specifications and have been track tested with our proto type. WHAT'S NEW WITH STEVE    Breakage on the new C4 body style of Corvettes is common on the outside universal this causes severe damage to the aluminum housing described as a hub. Dragvette is developing a hub protector to minimize damage to this area and increase safety.     There are at least 8 different cover castings I have found plus the rears are Dana 36's or Dana 44's the second one being the heavy duty model. You can identify the Dana 44 with 2 bolts at the top of the cover instead of one bolt in the top center of the cover. The 36 has a total of 8 bolts in the rear cover while the heavier 44 has 9 bolts in the rear cover.    We also have a design on the board for an additional inside safety loop that can be installed on the 63 to 82 Corvettes for the racer that can't be to careful.           GARAGE OR PERFOMANCE TIP OF THE WEEK! (Maybe Month)    Well here's tip number two. It is a simple deal and it keeps things much drier. You get a nice heavy rubber bungi cord and just as soon as you have the three convertor bolts removed that secure it to the flex plate you hook the bungi cord to the convertor and give the cord a good healthy pull and hook the other end to the back of the transmission. I remember the first time I dropped my convertor out on the floor after the tranny was drained I never saw such a mess. You can't believe how far a quart or two of oil will go on the floor!
